Searching People
The People page displays your church directory as a searchable list of households, or as a sortable table of individual people. You can quickly find anyone in your congregation, customize which information is shown, and export your results. Efficient searching is essential for day-to-day church administration tasks like following up with visitors, preparing contact lists, and managing member records.

Before You Begin
- You need an active B1 Admin account with permission to view people. See Roles & Permissions if you're unsure about your access level.
- Your church directory should have people in it. If you haven't added anyone yet, see Adding People or Importing Data.
Households and Table Views
The People page lists your directory by household, grouped alphabetically. Each row shows the household's photos, its name (for example, "The Smith Family"), and the names of everyone in it. Click a household to open the head of household's profile, or click any member's name to open that person. A count above the list shows how many households and people are showing.
Use the View as toggle above the list to switch between Households and Table. The Table view lists one person per row and is where you can sort and choose columns (see below). B1 remembers your choice on that device.
By default the page loads the first part of your directory. If you have more people, click Show All Members below the list to load everyone.
Quick Search
The Find a household or person box at the top of the People page lets you find members in real time:
- Click the search box at the top of the People page.
- Start typing a name.
- Results will filter automatically as you type (there is a brief delay of about half a second so the search does not fire on every keystroke).
- The list below updates to show only the matching results.
Click Clear (below the search box) to reset the search and show your whole directory again.
You do not need to press Enter. The search runs automatically after you stop typing.
Sorting Results
In the Table view, people are listed by last name, then first name. You can sort the directory a different way by clicking any column header:
- Click a column header (for example, Name or Email) to sort by that column.
- Click the same header again to reverse the sort order.
This makes it easy to find people alphabetically, by age, or by any other visible column.
Customizing Columns
Not every piece of information needs to be visible at once. You can choose which columns appear in the table:
- Click the Select columns icon in the People page header. (Columns apply to the Table view.)
- Check or uncheck columns to show or hide them. Available columns include:
- Photo
- Name
- Phone
- Address
- Birth Date
- Age
- Gender
- Membership Status
- Campus
- The table updates immediately to reflect your selections. Click Done to close the Select Columns dialog.
Showing Custom Fields as Columns
The column chooser has two tabs: Standard holds the built-in columns listed above, and Custom holds your church's Custom Fields along with the questions from any People forms. Check a custom field on the Custom tab to add it as a column, and each person's value for that field appears in the table. Values are shown the same way as on the person's profile -- Yes/No fields read Yes or No, Multiple Choice fields show the option's label, and dates are shown as short dates. People with no value for the field show a blank cell.
Exporting Search Results
You can download your current search results as a CSV file at any time:
- Apply any search or filters you want.
- Click the Export button in the People page header.
- A CSV file will download to your computer, ready to open in Excel, Google Sheets, or any spreadsheet application.
For more details on exporting, see Exporting Data.
For more advanced queries -- like finding everyone who hasn't attended in the last three months -- try the AI Search feature, which lets you search using plain language questions.
Advanced Search
Advanced Search lets you build precise filters by combining conditions. Open it by clicking Advanced below the search box on the People page, then expand a category and check the fields you want to filter on (you can click the field's name or its checkbox), choosing an operator and value for each. Categories include Names, Demographics, Contact, Membership, Activity (donations and attendance), and Custom Fields.
The Custom Fields category lists your church's Custom Fields — the fields you define in Settings to track your own information (such as a background-check expiration date). The operators offered match each field's type: text fields support contains / equals / starts with / ends with, number fields support the comparison operators, date fields support equals / after / before, and Yes/No and Multiple Choice fields let you pick a value. Any field you can filter on here can be saved as a live List.
Saving Searches as Lists
After running a search, a Save as List button appears in the People page header. Click it to store your current query under a name and optional category, so you can reload it instantly in future sessions. See Saved Lists for full details.
